  • Sanchi, India
Sanchi is notable as India's largest site of Buddhist remains. Interestingly, unlike most other major Buddhist pilgrimage spots, Sanchi isn't directly tied to an event in the Buddha's life. Instead, its significance largely stems from Emperor Ashoka (273-236 BC), who is credited with building and renovating a staggering 84,000 stupas, with the Sanchi stupas being the most renowned.
